Bismuth or titanium.... Why choose? Get both in this handcrafted pendant was made with a blue-purple bismuth crystal, wrapped in solid, Sterling silver wire and titanium quartz druzy beads, set in Sterling silver bead caps. The wire was oxidized naturally with egg yolk, then sealed in clear lacquer to resist tarnish and preserve the aged finish of the piece over time. The pendant, measures 35x22x17mm (1.4" x 0.9" x 0.7") and comes suspended on your choice of chain. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, since each and every bismuth crystal is unique and it was wrapped to echo the dimensions and morphology of the crystal.
Bismuth is naturally a silvery-white color as a fresh crystal but acquires it's colorful, iridescent surface due to it's exposure to air and oxidation of it's surface. The spiral stair stepped structure of a bismuth crystal is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside edges than on the inside edges. The variations in the thickness of the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the crystal causes different wavelengths of light to interfere upon reflection, thus displaying a rainbow of colors. WOW!
Quartz crystals may be enhanced by a process called chemical vapor disposition (CVD), in which the crystals are exposed, in a vacuum chamber, to a titanium-containing gas which bonds to the surface of the mineral and yields vivid, prismatic colors, as shown in this pendant.
