This handcrafted pendant was made with a richly-colored bismuth crystal, wrapped in solid, Sterling silver wire and genuine uranium glass beads, set in delicate herringbone weaves. The wire was oxidized naturally with egg yolk, then sealed in clear lacquer to resist tarnish and preserve the aged finish of the piece over time. The pendant, measures 38x24x16mm (1.5" x 0.9" x 0.6") and comes suspended on your choice of chain. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, since each and every bismuth crystal is unique and it was wrapped to echo the dimensions and morphology of the crystal. Vivid, rich colors! Ethereal pink, blue, green and yellow hues dance across the steps of the crystal as it turns in the light.

Bismuth is naturally a silvery-white color as a fresh crystal but acquires it's colorful, iridescent surface due to it's exposure to air and oxidation of it's surface. The spiral stair stepped structure of a bismuth crystal is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside edges than on the inside edges. The variations in the thickness of the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the crystal causes different wavelengths of light to interfere upon reflection, thus displaying a rainbow of colors. WOW!

Uranium glass fluoresces bright green under UV light and although it registers above background radiation on a Geiger counter, uranium glass is only negligibly radioactive and considered harmless. Uranium glass is often referred to as "vaseline glass" and acquired this nickname in the 1920s, given it's visual similarity to commercial petroleum jelly sold at that time. The term "vaseline glass" is still used widely in the United States and can refer to other kinds of glass that resemble it, but only glass that contains uranium fluoresces under black light, as shown in the photo.
