This handcrafted steampunk pendant was made with a vivid, multi-colored bismuth crystal, wrapped in solid, Sterling silver wire and features Herkimer diamonds, set in Sterling silver bead caps. The wire was oxidized naturally with egg yolk, then hand-polished to an aged finish. The pendant, measures 50x33x27mm (2.0" x 1.3" x 1.1") and comes suspended on your choice of chain. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, since each and every bismuth crystal is unique and it was wrapped to echo the dimensions and morphology of the crystal.
Bismuth is naturally a silvery-white color as a fresh crystal but acquires it's colorful, iridescent surface due to it's exposure to air and oxidation of it's surface. The spiral stair stepped structure of a bismuth crystal is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside edges than on the inside edges. The variations in the thickness of the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the crystal causes different wavelengths of light to interfere upon reflection, thus displaying a rainbow of colors. WOW!
Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated (pointy at both ends) quartz crystal found in exposed outcrops of dolostone in and around Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. While such double-terminated crystals may also be found in other parts of the world, crystals originating in New York are known for their extreme clarity.
