To make this piece, I first embedded blue LEDs in UV resin, which was poured into teardrop-shaped molds, then soldered to the prongs at the base. Lightning bolts were also molded in UV resin, then sanded for a frosted appearance. A Seeeduino Xiao microcontroller, which controls the lighting program, was set behind the lightning bolts on black perfboard. The Xiao may be re-programmed via the USB-C port on the side of the pendant, if desired. The board was then fitted with a removable wire-wrapped frame, upon which a vast array of upcycled stainless steel watch parts were woven in several layers-- first plates, then gears and finally accent beads, on top. Six glossy hematite beads, set in Sterling silver bead caps complete the otherworldly look of the piece. The blue raindrops were programmed to flicker like natural rainfall and I even added a brief wind gust, which can be seen as an acceleration of the flickering lights. The lightning bolts are connected to tilt sensors so the pattern changes with the position of the wearer; tilt to the right to trigger one bolt, or left to trigger the other bolt. Both may fire when the pendant is level. This is LED jewelry on a whole new level!
The circuitry is sealed in a combination of hot glue and electrical tape to keep out dirt/moisture, while affording access to the circuitry, should that ever be needed. The wire-wrapped frame may also be removed (by unscrewing the two nuts & bolts at the top of the frame) to make cleaning easier. Please bear in mind, however that this piece is not waterproof and moisture should be avoided.
The pendant measures 92x58x28mm (3.6" x 2.3" x 1.1") and comes wired directly to a black leather/silicone electrical wire necklace. I set a micro-USB port near the clasp at the back of the necklace, where you can plug in a power supply. This necklace comes with your choice of either alkaline battery pack or rechargeable power bank with holster that lasts about 6 hours continuously on 3 AAA batteries (longer on 4xAAA/3xAA/power bank). The belt shown in the photos is not included.
