This handcrafted pendant was made with a richly-colored bismuth crystal, wrapped in solid, Sterling silver wire and UV-reactive glass beads, set in delicate herringbone weaves. The wire was oxidized then hand-polished to an aged finish. The pendant, measures 41x31x17mm (1.6" x 1.2" x 0.7") and comes suspended on your choice of chain. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, since each and every bismuth crystal is unique and it was wrapped to echo the dimensions and morphology of the crystal. The glass fluoresces bright green under 365nm UV light.
Bismuth is naturally a silvery-white color as a fresh crystal but acquires it's colorful, iridescent surface due to it's exposure to air and oxidation of it's surface. The spiral stair stepped structure of a bismuth crystal is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside edges than on the inside edges. The variations in the thickness of the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the crystal causes different wavelengths of light to interfere upon reflection, thus displaying a rainbow of colors. WOW!
