To make this piece, I first embedded a color-changing LED in UV resin, molded into the shape of a crystal. Then, I set the gem on black perfboard and a 2-coin cell (CR2032) battery pack with switch, before fitting it with a removable wire-wrapped frame, upon which a vast array of upcycled stainless steel watch parts. Components were woven in several layers-- first plates, then gears and finally accent beads, on top. The crystal gradually fades through all the colors of the visible spectrum. This is LED jewelry on a whole new level!
The circuitry is sealed in a combination of hot glue and electrical tape to keep out dirt/moisture, while affording access, should that ever be needed. Please bear in mind, however that this piece is not waterproof and moisture should be avoided. The battery pack/circuitry can be lifted out of the pocket at the back of the frame to make cleaning easier.
FULL DISCLOSURE: The battery pack can stick in the frame a bit. Grasp each top corner with your thumb and forefinger, wiggle it a bit as you lift and it will come out. Putting it back in is easier but I don't recommend pushing it down too hard if you want to make your next removal easier. The price on this item reflects this flaw. This was my first finished piece of LED jewelry.
The pendant measures 84x42x32mm (3.3" x 1.7" x 1.3") and comes suspended on a 24" Sterling silver chain. The circuitry is sealed in a combination of hot glue and electrical tape to keep out dirt/moisture, while affording access to the circuitry, should that ever be required. The wire-wrapped frame may also be removed (by unscrewing the two nuts & bolts at the top of the frame) to make cleaning easier.
